For the beach Lovers, a must-see list of Rethymno beaches

Preveli Beach is possibly the most famous of Crete’s beaches. Situated at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, this is where the Grand River flows into the Mediterranean. It has a tropical landscape with several Theophrastus palm trees which line the river for around 500 meters before it empties into the sea. The beach itself is a small crescent flanked by cliffs with the lush green of the gorge behind. The shallow river runs across the beach, emptying in the far western corner and whilst the sand is coarse and pebbly this means the water is even clearer. As well as exploring the backdrop and river beyond, be sure to find the rock that is shaped like a heart. The beach is well sheltered from the wind and waves, so you won’t need umbrellas or wind breaks.

Platanias Beach

The beach lies about 4 km east of Rethymno Town. It is a beautiful sandy beach, open to the north. The beach is affected by summer winds, the so called meltemia. The beach is accessible from Rethymno Town. Platanias beach is well organized and offers many accommodation options. The beach has several Greek taverns offering local food, drinks and the chance to enjoy yourself by the seaside.

Geropotamos Beach

Geropotamos beach gets its name from the river which flows alongside the beach. It’s located just below the Geropotamos bridge, which is part of the main Heraklion-Rethymno-Chania highway which runs across the north of Crete island. The small beach is sandy and has crystal clear water, sometimes cool because of the river, which has water all year round and forms a small lake near the shore.

Adele Beach

Adele beach is on the north coast of Rethymno, that covers approximately 5 km of the coast. It is a famous beach among family travelers. The beach has clean sand and pebbles and you can enjoy a nice walk along the bay. The village of the area is really close to the beach so if you want, you can explore it.

The second beach lies a little bit to the east; however, it hasn’t got any infrastructure and therefore fewer visitors. The third beach is small and sheltered, with sand and clear waters, it used to be unorganized but now has lovely fresh-fish taverns as well as hotels and apartments to rent all around.
