It is a huge marble gate of a temple that began to be built in the 6th BC. century by Lygdamis, the then tyrant of Naxos. The temple is thought to have been dedicated to Apollo, but it was never completed.

Later it was used as a Christian temple and was completely destroyed by the Venetians, who used its marbles as building material in the construction of their castle.
